Baldacci: Beware of stimulus scammers

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — Gov. John Baldacci is warning Mainers to be wary of telephone calls or solicitations claiming to be related to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, or federal stimulus funds.

Baldacci says his office received a telephone call from a woman who said she had been contacted by a caller who asked for personal information, saying it was needed so a large sum of stimulus money could be deposited into her personal account.

Baldacci said it’s disgusting that during a difficult economic time, people would try to take advantage of others.

The state has set up a toll-free telephone number for people to report suspected fraud, waste or abuse. The number is: 866-224-3033.
