AUGUSTA, Maine — The annual auction of Maine moose hunting permits has netted nearly $95,000, with the high bid coming in at $10,313.
The state Inland Fisheries and wildlife Department said 10 hunters this week won the right to hunt moose in Maine next season by bidding a total of $94,843 in the permit auction. More than 30 people submitted bids.
The proceeds are used for youth conservation education scholarships for children ages 10 through 14. The camps teach wildlife identification, fishing, boating safety, archery, firearms handling, hunter safety and other outdoor skills.
The moose permit auction program was authorized by the Legislature in 1995.
