AUGUSTA, Maine — One of the two northbound lanes of Interstate 295 from Richmond to Gardiner is being shut down as part of a repaving project that’s scheduled to continue through much of the summer.

The Maine Department of Transportation says the lane closing, which takes effect Thursday, is likely to cause congestion for commuters. Drivers are encouraged to consider alternate routes.

The Kennebec Journal said the lane closure will continue through May as crews remove pavement in advance of resurfacing the highway.

Both northbound lanes from Topsham to Gardiner are slated to close June 15. At that point, northbound traffic will be rerouted to the southbound lanes and southbound drivers can take either U.S. 201 or the Maine Turnpike.
