PORTLAND, Maine — Officials with a bomb squad in Maine say a homeowner did the right thing by contacting authorities about a Civil War-era cannonball.

The cannonball, which was detonated Monday, was a collectible that had been in a family for years. A Falmouth resident contacted police about the cannonball stored in his basement.

Portland Police Capt. Ted Ross says people shouldn’t assume old hand-me-downs are safe. It turns out the cannonball was filled with gunpowder.

The bomb squad safely detonated the device in a rock quarry near U.S. 1 on the Falmouth-Cumberland line. Traffic was stopped briefly when the charge detonated.
