ORONO, Maine — Viola Giffin of Orono celebrated her 100th birthday on March 15 in Orono with her family.

She was born the youngest of four children in Kenduskeag in 1909, and was delivered by her father, Dr. Watson S. Purinton. Her mother was Nellie Purinton.

Mrs. Giffin graduated from Bangor High School in 1927 and earned a bachelor’s degree in home economics from the University of Maine in 1931.

She married Alvin Giffin, a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and University of Maine student, in 1933. Their only child, daughter Alola, was born in 1937.

Alvin Giffin served for 31 years with the U.S. Coast Guard.

The family traveled throughout the United States and Canada.

The Giffins retired to Fort Myers, Fla., but maintained a summer residence on Pushaw Lake to be near their daughter and her family in the Bangor area.

Mrs. Giffin has the distinction of being Orono’s oldest resident and received a certificate and hand-carved cane from the town of Orono to commemorate her new status.
