COREA – Raymond Everett Dunbar Jr., 92, died April 4, 2009, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth, after a brief illness. Ray was born May 25, 1916, in Corea, to the late Raymond E. and Amanda (Young) Dunbar II. Ray’s childhood was spent divided between Corea and Bar Harbor, where his father was employed. He attended grade school in Corea, high school at Higgins Institute, Charleston, and graduated from Bar Harbor High School. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the ship USS Utah as a machinist’s mate first class and was honorably discharged Sept. 12, 1941. After locating to California, Ray was employed by Bethlehem Steel, a naval shipyard, for several years before returning home to Corea to assist his father in the weir and lobster fishing business. Ray continued to fish well into his 80s from his boat, Just N Case, named for two of his grandchildren. Through the years when he was not working on the water, he could be found care-taking an assortment of summer homes and during the winter he plowed numerous driveways. It was also a known fact that if one needed almost anything it could be found in one of Ray’s three outbuildings – jammed packed full of “stuff.” If a request was made, he usually had it somewhere. Ray enjoyed baseball and watching his favorite team, the Boston Red Sox. Raymond was a member of Corea Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Natalie; and a sister, Lillian Bockius. He is survived by a sister, Morna Briggs; two sons, Raymond Dunbar III and his wife, Linda and their children, Justin and Brittany Dunbar of Corea; and Gregory and his wife, Catherine and their children, Casey Dunbar of Hampden and Tyler Dunbar of Prospect Harbor; as well as cousins, nieces, nephews, dear friends and neighbors. The family expresses gratitude to all of Ray’s caregivers. A graveside service will be announced at a later date.
