Mass.-based egg producer vows to go ‘cage free’

TURNER, Maine — A major egg distributor says it is no longer doing business with Radlo Foods following allegations of animal cruelty at an egg farm in Turner. Radlo, in turn, is severing its ties to the Turner operation and is pledging to become “cage-free.”

Fallout from the state’s investigation into conditions at Quality Egg of New England surfaced Monday when Eggland’s Best announced that it has suspended all production with franchisee Radlo.

Eggland said Massachusetts-based Radlo violated terms of its agreement by working with a farm that is not in compliance with Eggland’s strict animal welfare standards.

Radlo said that as of last week it is no longer doing business with the Turner farm and intends to halt cage confinement systems for hens within the next 10 years.
