Crew repairs water main on Main Street

BANGOR, Maine — A crew from the Bangor Water District spent a drizzly Sunday afternoon and evening repairing a ruptured water main on the east side of Main Street near the intersection with Lincoln Street and the Hollywood Slots gambling facility.

According to supervisor Donald Cammack, the 6-inch cast-iron pipe cracked in response to shifting pressures underground, including frost in the soils and the proximity of several other water mains.

The utility was notified of the break at about 1 p.m. after escaping water started breaking the pavement on Main Street. Water service was shut off to some businesses on both sides of the street, but Cammack said the impact was minimal since most shops were closed because it was Sunday.

Water service to Hollywood Slots was not affected, he said, but the facility did reroute vehicles leaving its parking garage to avoid the work area.

Traffic on Main Street was reduced to two lanes while workers excavated and repaired the broken water pipe.
