OLD TOWN, Maine — Public safety officials in Old Town are investigating a weekend fire that destroyed a two-unit apartment building on Water Street.

According to Lt. Matthew Redding of the Old Town Fire Department, the blaze was reported at about 6:30 Saturday night. When crews arrived on the scene, the fire was widespread throughout the building, he said.

Crews from Orono, Milford and Bangor assisted in fighting the fire, which was declared under control at about 10 p.m. Redding said there were no injuries, but the older wood-frame building at 211 Water St. was a total loss.

Detective Tom Adams of the Old Town Police Department said Sunday evening that one person had been living in the building, but was not home at the time the fire was called in. Investigators believe the blaze began on the first floor, but have not yet determined the cause, he said.

The name of the owner of the building, the identity of the tenant and other details were not available Sunday evening as the investigation continues.
