Textile maker closing Maine plant, 2 others

The Associated Press

BIDDEFORD, Maine — Textile manufacturer WestPoint Home says it’s closing its blanket factory in Biddeford because of a decline in sales, putting 121 people out of work.

The company also said Friday it is closing plants in Elkin, N.C., and Chipley, Fla.

An union official in Biddeford told WMTW-TV that the closing is expected to take place by mid-June. Ron Therrien said workers will receive one week of severance pay for every year they have been with the company.

WestPoint Home spokeswoman Nancy Golden in New York said in a statement that this is a sad time, and the company appreciates the contributions and commitments of its employees.
