OWLS HEAD – Annie Mae Rhodes Ross, 92, died in her sleep March 30, 2009, in Richardson, Texas, after three months of age-related illness. A longtime resident of Maine, she was born Dec. 15, 1916, in Union. After graduating as valedictorian from Union High School, she graduated from Eastern State Normal School and later in life, from the University of Maine, Orono. She taught at North Hope, West Hope, the Highlands and Purchase Street, Rockland; Elm Street, Camden; and Rockport Elementary. In 1946, she married Capt. George Ross of Owls Head. They raised their two children and made their home in Owls Head until his death in 1980. Annie continued to reside in Owls Head until she moved to Texas to be with her daughter several years ago, but she always considered herself to be a resident of Maine. She was active in numerous community organizations throughout her life. She is survived by her two children, MaryAnn Bitler and her husband, Bruce, of Richardson, Texas, and George Ross and his wife, Ann, of Henderson, Nev.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Annie would have been pleased with a memorial contribution to Natural Resources Council of Maine or ALS Association.
