HOPE, Maine – The School Union 69 school committee has hired David Wiggins as interim superintendet of schools following the unexpected death of Superintendent Deborah Stewart last week.

School committee Chair Yvonne Walker said in a press release that the committee voted unanimously to hire Wiggins on a three days a week and as-needed basis.

Stewart died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 25. Walker said in the release that the superintendent’s office will be closed Tuesday, March 31, in observance of services being held for Stewart in Presque Isle.

Wiggin has previously served as school superintendent in Union 69, retiring in June 2007, and also served as superintendent for SAD 29 in southern Aroostook County and as principal at Houlton High School, the press release indicated.

School Union 69 includes the towns of Hope, Appleton and Lincolnville.
