Lewiston parish may sell two churches

LEWISTON, Maine — A task force at the Roman Catholic Prince of Peace Parish in Lewiston is recommending the sale of two churches and rectories.

Parishioners were being told of the recommended plan at weekend services. Final recommendations are not expected until June.

The parish currently supports five churches — the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, St. Joseph, St. Patrick, Holy Cross, and Holy Family — and one elementary school.

Initial recommendations call for the sale of St. Joseph Church and St. Patrick Church, as well as the rectories. Other affected properties could include a former Dominican priory and the former Holy Family school building.

In a January message to parishioners, Monsignor Marc Caron said four of the five churches were operating at a deficit that totaled $180,000 last year.
