SHELDON HERBERT CARLSON

SWANS ISLAND – Sheldon Herbert Carlson, 82, died March 26, 2009, at Mount Desert Island Hospital. He was born May 9, 1926, on Swans Island, the son of Axel and Bernice (Turner) Carlson. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater. Sheldon was a dockworker in his early years, then he worked in road construction and was a local fisherman. He was a deacon in the Advent Christian Church for many years, a lifetime member of the American Legion, served on the school board and was vice president of the Maine Lobster Association. Sheldon is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Elizabeth (Heming) Carlson; one son, Donald Carlson of Swans Island; one daughter, Anna Carr and her husband, Dennis, of Northeast Harbor; four grandchildren, Thomas Carr, Hilary Lisee, Scott Carlson and Chris Carlson; and eight great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Hannah, Paige, Elisabeth, Grace, Axel, Eric and Stanley. He was predeceased by a son, David. Friends are invited to call 10 a.m.-noon March 30 at Atlantic Baptist Church, Swans Island, where funeral services will be held noon with Pastor Kenneth Dutille Jr. and Pastor Benjamin Redman officiating. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery, Swans Island. Contributions in Sheldon’s memory may be made to Advent Christian Church, Swans Island, ME 04685.
