Maine Special Olympics head reacts to Obama

PORTLAND, Maine — The head of the Special Olympics in Maine says President Obama’s bowling joke this week can be a teaching moment.

While on the “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno, Obama compared his poor bowling skiills with the Special Olympics. He quickly apologized.

In Maine, Phil Geelhoed, said words can hurt, but he said the remark is an excellent opportunity to remind people that Special Olympics athletes need to be seen for their skills and abilities, not their disabilities.
