Coast Guard to break up ice on Kennebec River

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine — Four Coast Guard cutters are set to begin breaking up ice on Maine’s Kennebec River as a safeguard measure to cut down on the chances of spring flooding.

The Coast Guard says the cutters will begin working the ice-choked river on Monday.

The combination of river ice and high water levels from spring runoff increase the chances of spring flooding. The ice-cutting operation is expected to last about 10 days.
