BANGOR, Maine — A Saturday afternoon fire seriously damaged a two-story house on Essex Street.

No one was hurt in the blaze at 1312 Essex St. that was reported shortly before 4 p.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Richard Cheverie.

Firefighters from the Central and Griffin Road stations were training with the new firetruck on the waterfront when the call came in shortly before 4 p.m., Cheverie said Sunday.

“When we arrived, there was heavy fire showing from the second floor on one side,” he said. “Heavy smoke was visible all the while we were en route [on Essex Street].”

Cheverie said it took firefighters seven minutes to arrive at the scene.

The house, owned by Dominick and Kimberly Riitano, is located near a few lots from where Burleigh Road ends at Essex Street. Bangor police diverted all but local traffic off Essex Street at Grandview Avenue to detour onto Broadway and then to Burleigh Road to reach residences past the fire location.

Kimberly Riitano and two children were at home when the blaze broke out, but were outside uninjured when firefighters arrived, Cheverie said.

The two-story house had about $100,000 in damage and is insured, according to Cheverie. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Dominick Riitano is a member of the Maine Air National Guard and is on a short-term assignment in Europe, the assistant chief said.
