WINTER HARBOR, Maine — Mark Herrington of Franklin is one of six sculptors from all over the world picked to participate in the 2009 Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium, the artist selection committee for the symposium announced Friday.

The rest of the selected artists are Attila Rath Gerber of France, Jhon Gogaberishvili of the Republic of Georgia, Ahmed Karaly of Egypt, Roland Meyer of Germany and Songul Telek of Germany.

The sculptors will arrive in Maine in late July and will have six weeks to create a large-scale sculpture for a public site.

The participating communities are Franklin, Gouldsboro, Machias, Deer Isle-Stonington, Bar Harbor and Lamoine. Each town will plan activities to introduce their artist to the community and to raise money to offset the cost of the sculpture.

The symposium will be held July 25 to Sept. 12 and will take place at the Schoodic Education and Research Center, which is located on Schoodic Point in the Acadia National Park area of Winter Harbor. The symposium is free and open to the public.

Send donations to Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium, P.O. Box 22, Steuben, Maine, 04680.
