Shibles to coach all-stars

BRUNSWICK, Maine — Bowdoin College women’s basketball head coach Adrienne Shibles will join two of her players, Alexa Kaubris of Rumford and Maria Noucas, at the New England Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game March 28 at Springfield, Mass.

Shibles, the New England Small College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, was also named New England Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division III Coach of the Year after leading the Polar Bears to their eighth NESCAC title in her first season.

The Knox native, who is a graduate of Mount View High School in Thorndike and Bates College, led Bowdoin to a 24-5 season.

Noucas was named a first-team All-NESCAC performer this season, averaging 4.7 assists and a 2.9 assist-to-turnover ratio. Kaubris returned from injury in the second half of the season to average 8.3 points and 3.8 rebounds.

The all-star game tips off at 1:30 p.m. on the Western New England College campus.

Steenstra will row Bates’ boat

Peter Steenstra is no longer Bates College’s interim head rowing coach. Now he’s just the head coach.

Steenstra was assistant coach for the 2007-08 season before replacing Andrew Carter, who resigned as head coach in July 2008. He led the men’s team to a No. 5 ranking in New England and the women to a second straight appearance in nationals and fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships last season.

Before coming to Bates, Steenstra coached the men’s and women’s novice teams at Colby College for three years.

UM field hockey settles schedule

The University of Maine field hockey team has finalized its spring schedule for the 2009 season and will start things off in April with the first of four round robin tournaments.

The Black Bears open play April 4 at Durham, N.H., with games against Holy Cross, New Hampshire and UMass.-Lowell. The following weekend takes the Bears to Boston to play Harvard, Brown and Northeastern. Maine will go back to New Hampshire April 19 for the America East Spring Tournament and games with Vermont, Fairfield, and Albany.

Maine’s spring season wraps up April 25 at Fairfield, Conn., with games against Rider, Quinnipiac, Bryant and Fairfield.

USM names tennis captains

The University of Southern Maine men’s tennis team has named junior Josh Warren of Hermon and senior Derek Stevenson of Raymond captains for the 2009 season.

The Huskies, Little East Conference runners-up last year, started their 12-match regular season schedule this week.

Warren and Stevenson teamed up to win the first doubles title in the Little East championship match.

Warren claimed the No. 2 singles title as a freshman in 2007, going 11-2. Last year, he went 8-7 in singles play.

In singles play, Stevenson has gone 30-9 and finished as conference individual champion three times.
