ELLSWORTH, Maine — Hancock County has a new regional communications director.
The Hancock County commissioners announced Thursday the board has hired Jonathan Mahon of Ellsworth. Mahon replaces Linda Dunno, who left the position late last year to return to her native Ohio. Dunno had held the position since it was created in 2002.
Bob McKenney, who retired as Ellsworth’s fire chief a few years ago, had been filling the post in the interim until a permanent replacement could be found.
Mahon, a former lieutenant with Maine State Police, works at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth and is on the Ellsworth City Council, where he served previous terms in the 1990s and earlier this decade. Immediately before his current stint on the council, Mahon served on the Ellsworth School Committee.
In a prepared statement, the county’s commissioners indicated that Mahon was chosen out of a pool of 14 applicants.
“Mahon brings a wealth of experience in public service to the position,” the commissioners wrote.
According to Hancock County Clerk Cynthia Deprenger, Mahon is expected to begin his new duties on April 1.
Mahon’s hire is the second high-level position in Hancock County government that has been filled in recent months. In January, the county hired Philip Roy, a former county commissioner in Somerset County, as its new chief financial officer.
Roy’s position was created last year by Hancock County commissioners after the death of former county treasurer Sally Crowley, who worked full time. Concerned that Crowley’s elected replacement might not be as qualified, commissioners created an appointed financial manager position to handle most of the county’s increasingly complex finances.
The commissioners said at the time that they wanted to make sure the county’s books are maintained by an experienced, qualified professional.
In addition to Roy, the county has an elected part-time county treasurer position, which is held by Cathy Planchart. Planchart, an Ellsworth resident, also works full time as a community relations officer for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust.
