Michaud opposes higher health charges for veterans

PORTLAND, Maine — The chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health is lining up in opposition to an Obama administration plan to charge third-party insurers for treatment of service-connected disabilities or illnesses.

Rep. Mike Michaud said the nation must not back away from its legal and moral obligation to veterans. The Maine Democrat characterized the administration proposal as “unconscionable” and an insult to veterans who have been hurt overseas.

Michaud outlined his stance in a letter this week to Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki.
