GUILFORD, Maine — The owners of the Covered Bridge Restaurant have decided to close the doors to the restaurant on March 22 because of the economy.

“Basically, the economy has taken its toll on us,” Vicki Sylvia said this week. “All the layoffs in the area have had a domino effect on the business,” she said.

About a dozen employees including Sylvia, her husband, Russell, and other family members will be affected by the closure.

The restaurant, which has been in business for about 50 years, might reopen after Memorial Day if the economy improves, Sylvia said. The motel adjacent to the restaurant will remain open.

Sylvia said it was painful to close the business. “We’ve watched families grow up in here and some of those have come to work for us,” she said. Sylvia said. She said people have cried when they spotted the sign that said the restaurant was closing.
