DOVER-FOXCROFT – Charlene Woodard Hewett, 85, died peacefully and unexpectedly March 15, 2009, at home. She was born June 23, 1923, in Dover-Foxcroft, the daughter of Ralph and Ethel (Lindsey) Woodard. She grew up in Dover-Foxcroft and graduated from Foxcroft Academy in 1942. She married Charles A. Hewett, May 14, 1949, and was widowed in 2002 after 53 years of marriage. Charlene worked many years as an AT&T telephone operator and was active in Sebec Corner Baptist Church, where she had been a member since 1977. She was an avid quilt maker, and enjoyed gardening and crafts. She is survived by three sons, Victor of Ashburn, Va., Russell and his wife, Vandy, of Dover-Foxcroft, and Roger and his wife, Joan, of Plainfield, N.H.; two sisters, Ruth Shuman of Modesto, Calif., and Gloria Burgess of Carmel; four grandsons, four granddaughters, seven great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Gail Doore of Dover-Foxcroft. She was an exceptionally kind and gracious woman who was dearly loved by many. Friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, where funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, with Pastor Isaiah Hill officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the family lot at Dover Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Charlene’s memory may be made to Sebec Corner Baptist Church, 285 Milo Road, Sebec, ME 04481.
