Tryouts for the National Premier Soccer League’s Maine Sting and Women’s Premier Soccer League’s Maine Tide will be held on Saturday at the Fields4Kids indoor facility on the Beal College campus in Bangor.

The husband-and-wife team of Jukka and Carmen Masalin, who are assistant soccer coaches at Hartwick College (N.Y.), will coach the respective teams.

The men will try out from 9-11 a.m. with the women to follow from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Premier Soccer Leagues are for high-level amateur players, mostly college-aged. They don’t get paid, so they retain their college eligibility.

Jukka Masalin, who played for the Finnish Under-16, Under-18 and Under-21 national youth teams and played professional soccer in Finland, Germany and Sweden, was named the Sting’s head coach in January and his wife was selected in February.

“It seemed like an automatic fit,” said Cheryl Stokes, president of the Atlantic Sports Group, which brought the Sting and Tide to Bangor last summer. “It’s going to be a good fit for the grassroots kind of teams we’re putting together this year. Jukka has a ton of experience all over the world and Carmen has a ton of energy. I’m real excited about it.”

The Masalins will be monitoring the tryouts on Saturday.

Stokes expects a better turnout than the January tryout “because college players are allowed to participate.” She explained they weren’t able to try out in January due to NCAA regulations.

It will cost players $25 to try out and players must be at least 16 years of age. They will need their own cleats, shorts, shin guards, shirts and bottles of water.

Stokes said she expects each team to have a blend of players, including some who will be recruited.

“We’ll have a few back from last year, we’ll have some new blood and we’ll have quite a few local players,” said Stokes.

The season will begin in May.

Stokes said they are still looking for sponsors and employment opportunities for their players.
