Bill proposes Maine helmet law

AUGUSTA, Maine — A legislative committee will consider a bill to restore a motorcycle helmet law in Maine.

Rep. Paulette Beaudoin’s bill would apply to all motorcyclists, restoring a mandate that was repealed decades ago. The Biddeford Democrat’s bill seeks $500 fines for violators.

Present Maine law requires that children under 15 who are motorcycle passengers wear helmets. It also requires motorcycle permit holders, and those who have had their licenses for less than a year, to wear helmets.

Two other motorcycle-related bills are up for hearings before the Transportation Committee on Thursday. One requires warning signs where rumble strips are located. The other would require helmets for riders and passengers up to age 18.
