MACHIAS, Maine — The Washington County grand jury on Wednesday indicted two men in the theft of $18,000 from a Jonesport lobster company.

Joseph H. Dougherty, 28, of Jonesport and Anthony W. Merchant, 49, of Machias were each charged with theft by unauthorized taking.

The incident took place from Sept. 1 to Oct. 30, 2008.

Each has been released on $25,000 unsecured bail.

Dougherty asked to talk to police in early November after officials at Smith Lobster Co. in Jonesport became suspicious of his activities. He told the Maine State Police that he had been stealing from the company where he had worked as a wharf manager for four years, according to court documents on file in Machias.

He said he had written checks from the Smith Lobster checking account, under his authority as manager, to Anthony Merchant, pretending he was paying one of the fishermen, the affidavit said. Merchant, who was not a fisherman, would cash the checks and the two men allegedly would split the money, the court document added.

Dougherty told police he had written more than 50 checks totaling more than $18,000.
