DeWitt on track to NCAA meet

Joey DeWitt of Ellsworth has qualified to compete in the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Houston and will run the mile preliminary round Friday.

DeWitt, a senior at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, is seeded 10th in the mile and teammate Angus MacDonald is seeded 11th. Both will run the prelim to try and qualify for the mile final on Saturday.

DeWitt is one of six River Hawks athletes competing in an individual event at the championships meet. UMass Lowell also has three relay teams competing.

Dumas in Div. III championships

Bethany Dumas, a freshman at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham, will be one of 16 student-athletes competing in the pole vault at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., Friday.

The Augusta native, already the school record-holder in the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet, 1½ inches (3.7 meters), is the fifth person in the history of USM’s women’s track program to compete in an NCAA indoor championship. Dumas easily qualified for nationals as the qualifying standard was 11-3¾ (3.45).

Three named AE All-Academic

Three University of Maine athletes have been named to America East All-Academic Teams.

Men’s swimming and diving program’s Jeremy Bender and Kevin Staples of Mount Desert Island and men’s track and field athlete Christopher Harmon were selected.

Bender, a sophomore, holds a 3.89 GPA while majoring in marine science. He recorded top-10 finishes at the America East Championships in the 1,650 freestyle and the 400 individual medley. He was also 12th in the 500 freestyle.

Staples, a junior, has a GPA of 3.40 and is majoring in earth science. At the America East Championships, he claimed 12th in the 200 backstroke.

Harmon, a political science major, is a three-time Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner. He placed 16th at the America East Indoor Championships in the 3,000 meter run in February.
