Mainer charged in theft of thousands of $1 bills

The Associated Press

AUGUSTA, Maine — A 39-year-old Augusta man has been charged with stealing $6,000 in $1 bills and quarters from his employer after trying to convert thousands of bills at a bank and using change-counting machines at local supermarkets.

Calvin Ratcliff is charged with taking the money from a Ferris Music Co. van parked in a fellow employee’s driveway in Winslow. The bills and quarters came from jukeboxes, pool tables and pinball machines the company owns.

After the theft, police asked credit unions and banks to be on the alert.

A bank in Augusta called police Saturday to say someone was trying to turn in $3,200 in $1 bills. Police also contacted supermarkets and learned that a man had been converting lots of quarters in change-counting machines.
