MILO, Maine — Residents voted Monday to sell the former medical building and land on West Main Street to get the property back onto the tax rolls.
“As we all know we’re cash-poor,” Milo Town Manager Jeff Gahagan told the approximately 90 residents who attended the annual town meeting. The Dr. Arnold’s Medical Building, which was given to the town years ago, will be placed up for bid.
The municipal spending plan of $2,857,827 approved Monday reflects a decrease from last year, according to Gahagan. Last year, expenditures were $2,908,405.
All 25 warrant articles were approved as proposed by selectmen. While the budget is under the tax levy limit of LD 1, residents voted to allow selectmen to increase it should the need arise later in the year.
No merit increases were budgeted for municipal employees this year. “Our employees have not complained one bit about that,” Gahagan said, adding they are doing their part to help the economic situation.
It was noted at the meeting that the Police Department’s budget reflected a decrease from 2008 and 2007. Town officials have budgeted $170,499 for the department compared with $185,000 budgeted in 2008. That reduction was made by paring overtime.
Asked by a resident whether that is enough to fund the department, Gahagan remarked, “We are going to have to be real creative.” He said the budget has the support of the police chief and his department.
Town officials do plan to purchase a new cruiser as soon as possible to replace an older vehicle that has problems.
Robert Ade and incumbent Gerald Brown were elected to the two three-year terms on the Board of Selectmen. The voting results were as follows: Ade, 96; Brown, 88; Donald Crossman, 65; Donald Banker, 55; and James Lord, 42.
Although no one ran for the SAD 41 board, Shannon Bishop received the most write-in votes and was elected.
Residents recognized Selectman Joe Beres, who did not seek re-election, for his 15 years of dedicated service. He was presented with a plaque.
