At Winter Haven, Fla., Jason Rago hit three doubles and three singles while driving in three runs as Fairfield University of Connecticut pounded the University of Maine. Tucker Nathans had two doubles and three runs scored for 1-5 Fairfield. Ryan Furbeck hit a double and drove in three runs. Tyler Wosieger and Mark Skrapits knocked in two runs each. Chris Horning doubled and singled. Kevin McAvoy of Brewer led the 4-5 Black Bears with a single and a solo home run. Danny Menendez and Justin Leisenheimer each singled twice.

SOFTBALL

Maine wins two

At Kissimmee, Fla., the University of Maine ran its winning streak to five games as the Black Bears earned two wins Friday. Maine defeated Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne 3-1 in the first game and beat the University of Detroit 8-1 in the second game. In the first game, Alexis Souhlaris allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out one through seven innings to lead the Black Bears. Ashley Waters homered and singled while Kristen Calvetti had two singles and a run scored. In the second game, Terren Hall had two doubles and a single with three RBIs for 10-10 Maine. Courtney Gingrich hit a single and her first home run of the season. Kali Burnham and Kirsten Allen each had two hits.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

WPI 86, Husson 57

At Worcester, Mass., Jerome Kirkland had 15 points and five assists as Worcester Polytechnic Institute defeated Husson University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Fernando Perez had 14 points and 10 rebounds for WPI. Jeffrey Robinson scored 11 points and Matt Carr added 10 points. Scott Kissinger led Husson with 10 points. Matt MacKenzie chipped in nine points.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Emmanuel 55, Southern Maine 49

At Amherst, Mass., Kristen LeBel scored 22 points as Emmanuel College bounced the University of Southern Maine out of the NCAA Tournament. Iman Davis scored 15 points for Emmanuel. Liz Brooks had eight rebounds and four steals. Kaylie DeMillo led the Huskies with 12 points and three steals. Stacey Kent scored 10 points while Haley Johnson and Kristi Violette had 10 rebounds each.

Bowdoin 72, Castleton State 31

At Brunswick, Katie Bergeron scored 16 points to lead Bowdoin College past Castleton State College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Ellery Gould added 12 points for the Polar Bears. Mary Nienow led Castleton State College with seven points.
