WESTBROOK, Maine — The economic downturn is claiming a privately funded library that started in Westbrook 80 years ago for workers at the S.D. Warren paper mill.

The Warren Memorial Library will close this spring.

Board members said the stock market plunge has eaten away at the library’s endowment. The library is supported solely by funds from the nonprofit Warren Memorial Foundation.

Residents still may go to Westbrook’s public library, the Walker Memorial Library, located down the street from the Warren library.
