JONESBORO, Maine — Down East area churches are uniting to invite all who want to come and worship together during the World Day of Prayer 2009 ceremony at the Jonesboro Union Church beginning at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6.

Representatives from area churches have met to plan the local event, and the worldwide service has been organized and written this year by the women of Papua New Guinea. This year’s theme is “In Christ there are many members, yet one body.”

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of women of many faith traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday in March. Each year a different country serves as the writer of the World Day of Prayer worship service.

World Day of Prayer 2009 will begin joyfully at the first sunrise of March 6 in the Pacific region where Papua New Guinea is located.

Among the congregations involved in the 2009 World Day of Prayer in the Down East region are St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church, Whitneyville Congregational Church United Church of Christ, Jonesboro Union Church, Lubec Congregational Church, Centre Street Congregational Church United Church of Christ, Jacksonville United Methodist Church, East Machias Congregational Community of Christ, Holy Name Catholic Church and Marshfield Congregational Church.

After the Friday afternoon service, refreshments will be served at the Chandler River Community Center, adjacent to the Jonesboro Union Church.

Offerings received during the World Day of Prayer services will go to the work of the women of Papua New Guinea. Checks should be made out to WDP USA. The mailing address is WDP USA Committee, PO Box 13121, Des Moines, IA 50310.
