EAST MILLINOCKET – Elsie Mahalia (York) Thompson Lyons, 95, passed away Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Katahdin Nursing Home, after a long illness. She was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Medway, daughter of Rodney and Hattie (O’Donal) York. Elsie was a lifelong resident of the area and during World War II she lived in Portland and worked at Burnham & Morrill Baked Bean factory. God gave her a beautiful soprano voice, which she used to glorify Him in gospel music. Elsie was a lifelong member of Calvary Temple Assembly of God, East Millinocket. She is survived by one son, Arthur Thompson and his wife, June; two stepchildren, Gail Manzo, and Bob Lyons and his wife, Paulette; a brother, Marshall York; three sisters, Wilda Grinslade and her husband, Claude, Cordelia Cook and her husband, Norman, and Priscilla York and her husband, Ray; four grandchildren, Royce Thompson and his wife, Eola, Sterling Thompson and his wife, Ann, Relland Thompson and his wife, Jeni, and Joel Thompson and his wife, Mary; 12 great-grandchildren, Darrick and Stephanie Thompson, Erika and Jason Ingalls, Maghan and Matt Harmon, Danielle Thompson, Tyler, Dustan, Lawrence, Kerry and Lanny Thompson; six stepgrandchildren, Frank Manzo Jr., Lynn McIntyre, Heidi Dickey, Bethany Whitehouse, Kelley York and Bobbi Jo McDermott; six great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Elsie will also be missed by a special friends, Marsha and Ann. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two husbands, Lawrence Thompson and Harold Lyons; three brothers, Guy, Enoch and Rodney York; and a stepson-in-law, Frank Manzo Sr. The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Katahdin Nursing Home, Gods guardian angels, who watched over Mom day and night, and gave her such tender, loving care for several years. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Temple Assembly of God, 2 Orchard St., East Millinocket, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, with the Rev. Regginal Adams, pastor, officiating. Spring interment will be at East Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Elsie may be sent to Manna Ministries, Inc., P.O. Box 2763, Bangor, ME 04402.
