MACHIAS, Maine — A 27-year-old man who pleaded guilty to murdering his former girlfriend and another man was sentenced to life in prison on Friday afternoon. The sentencing took place in Washington County Superior Court here.

Richard Widdecombe Jr. of Machias changed his plea earlier this month to guilty in the January 2008 shooting deaths of 29-year-old Katie Cabana and 41-year-old Aaron Settipani at Cabana’s home in Marshfield.

He had earlier pleaded not guilty and not criminally responsible by reason of mental defect.

Widdecombe faces a sentence of 25 years to life on each count.
