BU 76, Maine 65

At Boston, the Boston University Terriers won their sixth straight game against the University of Maine men’s basketball team and the 1,000th in program history as Corey Lowe, John Holland and Jake O’Brien combined for 52 points at Case Gym Thursday night.

The 16-12 Terriers (10-5 in America East) came within one rebound of having three players get double-doubles as 6-foot-5 Holland led the way with 20 points and 10 rebounds, 6-9 freshman center Jeff Pelage came off the bench for 10 points and 12 rebounds, and 6-8 forward O’Brien finished with 18 points and nine rebounds. The 6-2 Lowe finished with 14 points and seven assists for the BU, which outrebounded Maine 42-31 and scored 17 second-chance points to Maine’s nine.

Sophomore forward Troy Barnies of Auburn scored Maine’s first nine points and had his second career double-double while leading the 9-19 Black Bears with 13 points and 10 rebounds. He also had two blocked shots. Freshman guard Gerald McLemore had 16 points and junior guard Mark Socoby of Houlton scored 11 for Maine, now 4-11 in AE play with one game to go.

The Bears were still without the services of senior guard and super sub Kaimondre Owes, who warmed up with the team but is still fighting through a flu bug. Sophomore forward Malachi Peay, who came in as a reserve after Barnies started in his place, wasn’t 100 percent either.

The loss guarantees that Maine, which has dropped three straight and eight of its last nine games, will have to play in the conference’s preliminary “play-in” game between the Nos. 8 and 9 seeds in the AE tournament for a second straight year.

St. Joseph’s 75, Albertus Magnus 64

At Standish, Ray Eatmon and Tyler Kelley scored 14 points each as St. Joseph’s triumphed in the GNAC tournament and advanced to the championship game. Scot Vachon and Alberto Rue added 12 points apiece for the Monks. Ray Askew led Albertus Magnus with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Francisco Cordova scored 14 and Walden St. Juste 13.
