PORTLAND, Maine — Matt Jacobson, president and chief executive officer of Maine & Co., is considering a bid for governor next year as a Republican.

The 48-year-old former railroad executive said his efforts to bring jobs to Maine prompted his decision to form an exploratory committee as the first step toward a run for the Blaine House. Maine & Co. is devoted to economic development in the state.

Jacobson, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former Air Force pilot, said his goal is to create an economic climate in Maine that enables it to compete with other states and in the global economy.

Jacobson, who lives in Cumberland, would be making his first bid for elective office.
