The cities of Portland and South Portland recently adopted ordinances regulating the raising of chickens in residential areas. The ordinance was prompted by more and more people joining what is known as the urban farm movement. The recession has accelerated the trend of people raising some food, like eggs, at home. Is it cost-effective for families? Which animals provide the best pay-off for a small investment? What are the pitfalls? Is this a good trend, reconnecting people to the source of their food, or is it a false savings?
Is it time to head back to the farm?
