As the Obama administration battles the current economic meltdown, comparisons are being made to the Great Depression of the 1930s and President Franklin Roosevelt’s response to it. Did his programs work? Was the massive government spending one of the reasons that unemployment was reversed? Or were they fruitless, and instead established entitlement programs that have lasted 75 years? Did World War II spending save the U.S. economy?
