DURHAM, N.H. — A University of Maine scoring drought lasting more than eight minutes in the final 10 minutes of the game allowed New Hampshire to avenge an overtime loss earlier in the season. The Wildcatd downed the Black Bears 63-54 in an America East conference game at Lundholm Gymnasium Thursday night behind a double-double effort by Dane DiLiegro (21 points, 12 rebounds). Freshman guard Gerald McLemore was the lone double-digit scorer for the 9-17 Black Bears (3-9 in AE play) with 15 points. Gardiner’s Sean McNally had eight points and 10 rebounds. Maine continued an 8-0 run by scoring the first four points of the second half and later erased another slight deficit with an 8-1 scoring run that prompted UNH coach Bill Herrion to call a timeout with 11:07 left and Maine holding its biggest lead of the game (44-38) to that point. The timeout didn’t slow Maine’s momentum, however, as Kaimondre Owes drove to the right block after a UNH miss, drew a foul, hit the runner and then hit the foul shot. McLemore made it 48-38 Maine with 9:14 to go by hitting one of two from the line. Alvin Abreu (13 points) ended UNH’s four-minute scoring drought with a 3-pointer from the left wing with 8:48 left and sparked an 18-0 run that ended with 58 seconds left and UNH leading 56-51. Maine had six turnovers during its nearly eight-minute scoring drought down the stretch. With Maine leading 23-21 at the 3:55 mark of the first half, the Wildcats scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 32-25 lead with 1:35 left. Maine scored the next four points to make it 32-29 UNH at halftime. The Wildcats scored 11 second-chance points to Maine’s four and the UNH bench outscored Maine’s 10-4 in the first half.
