Loggers help save dog found shot in the woods

By Sharon Kiley Mack, BDN Staff

MAYFIELD TOWNSHIP, Maine — A group of loggers is being credited with saving the life of a bull mastiff that wandered out of the woods Thursday, bleeding badly from the head and neck.

The workers summoned police and when Somerset County Deputy Michael Ross arrived, Ross’ lunch — a ham sandwich — was the bait that lured the dog into the cruiser.

After emergency surgery last night at Foxcroft Veterinary Services in Dover-Foxcroft, Detective Lt. Carl Gottardi of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office was informed that the dog had been shot several times in the neck and head.

“This is absolutely unacceptable,” Gottardi said.

“To have gone through all he had and then to trust the humans that were helping him is unbelievable,” Gottardi said. “After just a bit of hesitation, he came up to the deputy, got in the vehicle and ate the sandwich.”

Gottardi said the dog was shivering, had no collar and had lost a lot of blood, but there was no evidence of prior abuse. He said that aside from the gunshot wounds, the dog is in good health and is very well-mannered. The dog is a 4- to 5-year-old male.

“I just spoke to the veterinarian and the dog will make a full recovery,” he said.

“Obviously, we are looking to find out who did this to this animal, who the dog’s owner is, and we will press animal cruelty charges,” Gottardi said.

The dog wandered into a logging yard about one mile in from Routes 16 and 151 in Mayfield Township, Gottardi said. “There were no houses for miles,” he said. “A vehicle was seen leaving the area that may or may not be involved. It was described as a black or dark-colored Jeep with a white top.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Gottardi at the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office toll-free at 800-452-1933 or the anonymous tip line at 474-0230.
