Allegiant honors BIA for its support

BANGOR, Maine – Bangor International Airport was one of only five airports to be honored last week at an annual conference of Allegiant Travel Co., which operates the Allegiant Air carrier.

Airport Director Rebecca Hupp attended the Las Vegas conference to accept an “Above and Beyond” award from Allegiant’s president and CEO, Maurice J. Gallagher Jr.

“I would like to congratulate Bangor International Airport and thank them for the support they have shown us,” Gallagher said in a statement. “The airport management team and city of Bangor have been a pleasure to work with and we look forward to a successful, long-lasting relationship.”

This was the second straight year that BIA has received an award from Allegiant. Last year, the airport won the “Excellence in Marketing” award.

The impetus for the “Above and Beyond” honor was BIA’s decision to end its contract with a single fuel supplier and allow multiple suppliers. The decision allows carriers such as Allegiant to reduce operating costs by receiving competitive bids.

“We are pleased to have been recognized for our ongoing efforts to maintain low airport costs for our airline partners,” Hupp said.

Allegiant Travel, based in Las Vegas, aims to pair small airports with world-class destinations, many in Florida. Allegiant Air began offering service from Bangor to Sanford, Fla., near Orlando in November 2007.
