SANGERVILLE, Maine — A Garland man who allegedly broke into a Sangerville home and stole money and checks was arrested soon thereafter when he attempted to cash one of the stolen checks at a Dexter store, police said.

Shawn Nick, 21, of Garland was charged by Dexter police on Monday with receiving stolen property, forgery and operating a motor vehicle while under suspension. He also was charged by the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday with burglary.

Investigator Allen Emerson of the sheriff’s department said Nick allegedly entered a home on Silvers Mills Road either Sunday night or early Monday morning and took about $200 in cash and checks from the owner’s checkbook.

On Monday night, Nick allegedly attempted to cash one of the checks made out for a specific amount at Dexter Variety Store.

Cathy Debeurs, the store manager, said the man presented a check to the night clerk to pay for several items he had placed on the counter. The clerk thought it was unusual the check was made out to Dexter Variety for a specific amount and questioned the man. Nick reportedly told the clerk it was a payroll check, and that prompted the clerk to call the store owner, she said.

The store owner, who immediately called the Sangerville man and learned that the check had been stolen, advised his clerk to keep the man there until police arrived. To do that, the clerk told Nick she couldn’t cash the check but the store owner, who was on his way, would cash it.

Debeurs said the same man had visited the store on Monday morning to purchase items using a two-party check of $110 from the Kenduskeag area. Since the check was smaller in size than typical checks, Debeurs did not accept it and the man left, she said.

Nick, who is on probation for another conviction, is being held at the Piscataquis County Jail.
