BANGOR, Maine – Thomas Pottle scored 18 points, including 12 in the third quarter, as the No. 3 Shead of Eastport boys basketball team earned a 70-56 Eastern Maine Class D quarterfinal victory over No. 6 Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook Monday at the Bangor Auditorium.

The Tigers (17-3) move on to play the winner of Monday morning’s second quarterfinal between No. 2 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill and No. 7 Katahdin of Stacyville.

Shead looked inside to center Wayne Clossey (17 points, eight rebounds) and forwards Justin Lewey and Tyler Mitchell to battle back from an 8-point deficit in the first quarter, and then used Pottle in the third quarter when things opened up on the perimeter.

Shead had a slim 5-point lead when Pottle scored nine straight points in about a minute near the end of the third period, including a fast-break basket that was followed by a Southern Aroostook technical foul. Pottle converted both free throws and after the Tigers inbounded the ball – they got possession after the technical – he hit a 3-pointer about eight seconds later to give Shead a 52-38 lead.

Tyler Robinson and Dakota Sleeper each scored 13 points for the Warriors (11-7).
