EXETER, N.H.— A York man has been charged with punching a youth hockey referee after a game in Exeter, N.H.

Forty-six-year-old Stuart Santoro is charged with simple assault in connection with an incident last month at Phillips Exeter Academy, where 11- and 12-year-olds from York and Dover were playing.

Police say Santoro, whose son plays on the York team, punched the referee after yelling at him about the game.

Santoro’s lawyer said what happened had little to do with the game, took place sometime afterward and was provoked by something the ref said to Santoro.

Santoro has been suspended from attending York games for a year and will be on a year’s probation.
