MMA president announces plans to retire

CASTINE, Maine — Leonard H. Tyler, president of Maine Maritime Academy, announced Friday that he plans to retire from the top leadership post at the college.

Tyler formally notified the board of trustees at its regular quarterly meeting held this morning, according to an MMA press release.

He thanked the board for their ongoing support of his presidency and indicated that he would remain in the post until August 2010. Tyler said his formal announcement came well in advance of his actual retirement to provide the board with ample time to conduct an executive search.

Tyler has been president of the Castine-based maritime college since March 1995. He currently holds the second longest tenure as president in the college’s history, behind the 20-year presidency of Rear Adm. Edward A. Rodgers who served from 1964 to 1984.
