By Walter Griffin

BELFAST, Maine — A local man was arrested on domestic violence and weapons charges following an incident on Spring Street on Thursday night.

John Mitchell, 30, of Spring Street was charged with domestic violence assault and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person following the 10:07 p.m. incident. He was taken to the Waldo County Jail where bail was set at $2,500.

Police Chief Jeffrey Trafton said Friday that officer Rick Smith and Sgt. Walter Corey were called to the residence by a female occupant. Trafton said the couple were arguing over whether the woman was drunk and that Mitchell struck her in the face, giving her a bloody nose.

Mitchell, who is a convicted felon, was found to have a handgun in the bedroom.
