Bangor school closes early after water pipe breaks

By Eric Russell, BDN Staff

BANGOR, Maine — Bangor Water District officials who responded Thursday morning to a leaking pipe at the Fruit Street elementary school accidentally broke a valve while trying to repair the leak.

Water District general manager Kathy Moriarty said water would need to be shut off to the school while the valve and leak were repaired. School officials indicated they would send all pupils and staff home at noon.

Moriarty said crews were likely to spend most of the afternoon repairing the damage but the elementary school would reopen Friday.

The pipe that initially was leaking was not the main pipe that serves the building, Moriarty said, but rather the fire service pipe that provides water to sprinklers.
