Top 10 to compete for BSO slot

ORONO, Maine — The Bangor Symphony Orchestra has scheduled the 28th BSO Maine High School Concerto Competition with a free public recital at noon Saturday, Feb. 14, at Minsky Recital Hall, University of Maine Class of 1944 Hall.

The competition offers each year’s winner the opportunity to perform with the full Bangor Symphony Orchestra at the Youth Concerts next season.

Bangor Symphony Orchestra Executive Director David Whitehill said, “This concerto competition provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase and celebrate Maine’s young talent.”

The 10 finalists were chosen by audition tapes they submitted:

• Harpist Kristin Dillon of Exeter.

• Trumpeter Rebecca Edgecomb of Mount Desert.

• Trumpeter Shawn Garrett Williams of Brewer.

• Cellist Harim Park of Scarborough.

• Cellist Nikolai Renedo of Orono.

• Pianist Samuel Thorne Bagala of Gray.

• Pianist Nell Britton of Cape Elizabeth.

• Pianist Henry Chen of Scarborough.

• Pianist Rachael Townsend of Jefferson.

• Pianist Christopher Staknys of Falmouth.

The top contestant will be honored with the Annas-Cupp Award and a concerto performance with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra at the Youth Concert in 2010.

The Harold G. Annas-William J. Cupp Testimonial Fund was established in 1974 in appreciation for the years of artistic service the two men contributed to the Bangor Unitarian Church and Greater Bangor community.

Through their careers as music teachers, choir directors, chamber musicians, and directors of the Savoyards and community choruses, they touched many lives.

The 2008 Bangor Symphony Orchestra Maine High School Concerto Competition winner was Will Bristol, now a sophomore at the Merriconeag Waldorf High School in New Gloucester.
