Phony $20 bills reported in Portland

The Associated Press

PORTLAND, Maine(AP) — Police in Maine’s largest city are investigating reports of phony $20 bills being passed at five businesses.

Portland police said the bogus bills turned up at businesses on or near Congress Street in the downtown area.

Officials said an employee at Joe’s Smoke Shop identified a $20 bill as being counterfeit, but a woman who had handed over the bill took off on foot.

Police said they are looking for three suspects described as two black males and a woman who is either Hispanic or black.

Police urged store clerks to examine bills closely.
