MACHIAS, Maine — The Washington County Sheriff’s Department recently unveiled its new Web site, which is not only colorful with pictures of staff and the area, but also informative.

The site, www.wcsheriffsoffice.com, has been up about three weeks.

In addition to a brief description of the department and its philosophy, there are monthly and annual departmental reports prepared by Sheriff Donnie Smith.

There also is a link to the Maine Sex Offender Registry.

Chessie Johnson of Lubec created the Web site at a cost of $600 for her to build and maintain it. “That was a one-time fee,” Smith said Thursday. “I think it was well worth it.”

In addition to pictures of the sheriff, Chief Deputy Michael St. Louis and Jail Administrator Bob Gross, each of the deputies is listed.

“I think it is an easy way to contact people,” Smith said. “If you go to the right [of the Web page] under sheriff’s roster and click under any [deputy’s] name … it goes right to their e-mail address.”

Smith said he favored a Web site because it was a good way to keep the public informed. “I believe it is a good face for the sheriff’s office to get out there and let people know how their tax dollars are being spent. This is the best way I could do that,” he said.

The Web site also describes each of the department’s units, including its K-9 team with Deputy Tom Chambers and his dog Liberty and Deputy Dennis Perry and his partner Ava.

Deputy Dennis Dorsey heads up the department’s dive team, which is part of the search and rescue team for inland and coastal waters.

Dorsey and Supervisor Karina Richardson work with the Sex Offender Registry ensuring compliance with registration and reporting requirements for local offenders.

The chief deputy heads the computer crime task force.

The Sheriff’s Department also has an upgraded telephone system and now messages may be left for each of the deputies on their individual voice mail. The number is 255-3128.

“Listen to the automated message and each deputy’s extension is on there,” Smith said.
